Growing up in South Africa, I learnt the power of language young. On long car trips to visit my grandparents, I entertained my siblings with stories I’d invent. My parents soon bought me a tape recorder on which to record my stories. By the time I had learnt to read and write, I was absolutely hooked on words! This passion for telling stories led me to complete a degree in Journalism at the University of Johannesburg. Here, I learnt that language is not just a means to communicate truths and tales, but determines our very perception of truth itself. The words we use, and the way we use them, are not just a means of connecting, nor even of opening doors to the world, but of actively creating the world. The limits of one’s language are the limits of one’s world, as philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein noted. This understanding informed my work as a journalist and copywriter, and later informed my approach to teaching.
